Hayton’s late show the tops for Delaval

THERE were victories for the top four sides as leaders Seaton Delaval enjoyed a comfortabl­e 5-1 home win over bottom club Gateshead.

Michael Baxter opened the scoring for the leaders on 16 minutes, a lead they held into the second half and which Mark McDonnell doubled two minutes after the restart.

Matty Halliday pulled a goal back from the spot seven minutes in the second period before Matty Hayton took over - notching a late hat-trick to maintain Delaval’s two-point lead at the top.

Newcastle University remain second as they picked up a 3-1 victory at North Shields Athletic, goals coming from Matthew Konadou-Yiadom in the first half and Keith Douglas and Zachary Thomas in the second.

Athletic replied courtesy of an own-goal.

Shankhouse are a point further back and saw off defending champions Killingwor­th Town 2-0 thanks to strikes from Kevin Westphal and Jonathon Edwards.

Fourth-placed Birtley triumphed 2-1 against Percy Main, Andy Hall netting twice and Jake Forster replying.

Wallington moved up to seventh when they prevailed 3-1 at Ashington Colliers, all the counters arriving in a busy first half.

Michael Angus opened the scoring on six minutesd for the visitors, Paul Dunn replying minutes later.

Sam Watts restored Wallington’s lead 10 minutes before the break before John Paxton sealed the victory with the decisive third three minutes before the interval.

Newbiggin moved up a spot when they cruised to a 5-0 victory at Whitley Bay A courtesy of efforts from Jordan Walton, Bradley Higgins, Bailey Morton, Jordan Lashley and John Wyres.

Gateshead Rutherford shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw with Ponteland.

A topsy-turvy game saw three goals arrive either side of the halfhour after Andrew Davidson gave Rutherford the lead on 27 minutes and Reece Havelock-Brown then levelled.

A debut finish from Robert Jefferson restored home advantage for 2-1 but Sam White levelled on halftime as he danced through the home defence to score before an own-goal, two minutes after the restart, put the Pont in the lead for the first time.

Tom Wood did the same to Pont as White did to Rutherford with a last-gasp equaliser to earn a draw.

In the George Dobbins League Cup FC United of Newcastle (formerly Grainger Park) crashed out at home to Northbank Carlisle.

An early Stephen Townsley effort gave the Cumbrians the lead, doubled early in the second half by Kieron Blair - Ross Irving, just after the hour, sealing the 3-0 success.
