O what a night for Heed goal hero Burrow

- By JEFF BOWRON

A JORDAN Burrow double – his first for the club – saw Gateshead record their first National League away win of the season.

Burrow scored early in the first half and late in the second to seal a superb win over Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

The only disappointment in a commanding first-half display is the fact the Heed did not have more than a slender half-time advantage.

They got in behind the Orient defence in numerous occasions, Luke Hannant in particular causing problems down the left.

It was from the midfielder’s ninth-minute pinpoint cross Burrow buried a close range header past Charlie Grainger in the O’s goal.

Dan Hanford had only one save to make in an opening 45 minutes which saw Leyton Orient booed off at half-time.

Jake Caprice got in on the right of the box but Hanford spread himself to block the wing-back’s angled shot.

Other than that Gateshead were the slicker side, Hannant’s low cross beating Grainger but also the back post.

Hannant had a shot deflected off target and another dangerous Hannant delivery saw Jordan Preston fire wide beyond the back post.

It was good stuff from Gateshead and they showed a different side to their game after the break in a determined display in the capital.

Burrow, leading the line well, had another effort saved after the break, Scott Barrow blocking a James Dayton shot at the other end.

It had been a superb move by an Orient side low on confidence and they crucially missed a sitter midway through the half.

Fraser Kerr, otherwise impressive, completely missed Caprice’s cross, David Mooney with only Hanford to beat from close in – but shot weakly straight at him.

The O’s then came up with an even bigger howler at the other end to gift the Tynesiders all three, fully-merited points.

JJ O’Donnell knocked a long ball into the left channel and Caprice headed it past the advancing Grainger just inside the box.

Burrow, rewarded for his pressing late in the game, could not believe his good fortune as he shot into an empty net to seal a first win in seven league outings.
