Foster on target in draw for Mags

FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LG NORTHERN DIVISION ONE

-

TYNEDALE travelled back from Castleford with the points after a dominant display saw them comfortably win 4-0.

Tynedale started brightly, Megan Watson sending a cross across goal but just out of reach of the forwards in the first minute.

Twenty minutes later Tynedale did have the ball in the net - but the referee ruled out Christine Murray’s effort.

Rebecca Jones then produced a good save to deny the hosts before Tynedale finally went in front.

The impressive Murray netted ten minutes before the break, NEWCASTLE United ground out a 1-1 draw with visitors Liverpool MF, who were wasteful in front of goal.

The Merseyside outfit started the day four points off leaders Hull City, hoping to use their game in hand against the Lady Mags to close the gap - and they made the perfect start.

Only 90 seconds in the visitors took the lead.

Goalkeeper Grace Donnelly kicked the ball straight to midfielder Charlotte Gill, who controlled it and then, from a full 30 yards out, powerfully despatched the ball back past Donnelly and into the net.

The lead, however, was short lived as, after 11 minutes, Newcastle were back on level terms - Jess Foster netting her fifth goal of the campaign. converting a Watson cross. The hosts’ goalkeeper made numerous saves including a great double block to first deny Jane Riddell from a free-kick and then to get up quickly to thwart Ashley Lambert on the rebound.

However, three minutes before the interval, she was beaten again as a Riddell free-kick found Murray, who smashed in her second.

The game was made safe 20 minutes into the second period when Siobhan Simpson netted

Both sides were forced into making substitutions four minutes later as a clash of heads forced off United defender Megan McKenzie, who was taken to hospital, and Abby Pope for MF.

Chances were at premium after the delay before a late flurry before half-time saw Foster’s shot saved, Steph Ord putting the rebound wide. before player of the match Murray completed her hat-trick.

A brilliant individual effort saw her beat three players before calmly finishing to secure the emphatic victory.

The result leaves Tynedale only three points behind joint leaders Durham Cestria and Wallsend BCL.

BCL saw their chance of moving to the summit thwarted when their home match with Wakefield was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Toon goalkeeper Donnelly saved a Carla Lee free-kick and Roisin Havelin shot wide wide before the half-time whistle.

MF quickly forced Donnelly into producing two saves after the restart, the dangerous Lee crossing for the head of Lynsey Longhurst.

Liverpool continued to threaten but neither side was able to find the winner.

Carina Mendes shot just wide, as did Lee, and then Molly Farley was guilty of missing another chance, skying her shot over the bar for the title challengers.

Donnelly again made another good save to stop a Havelin effort but the Lady Mags stood firm and are now four points clear of the relegation zone.
