TEARFUL Carrie Carlisle broke down during a TV interview alongside husband Clarke over his disappearance.

Carrie said she feels guilty she had not been able to prevent what happened.

The couple appeared on ITV’s This Morning to talk about when Clarke disappeared on September 15.

He has since said he was “trying to find a responsible way to die”, before he was found in Liverpool.

The 38-year-old had written his partner a tragic suicide note – which she received just an hour after he had left.

Carrie, a columnist for The Journal, found the message and said she went “into autopilot”. She added: “It’s just surreal, I cant even begin to describe what that’s like...we missed so much, we made so many mistakes.”

The former Premier League defender explained it had been prompted by a number of things including retiring from football and changing jobs.

Clarke said: “It was at the end of a deep depressive episode.

“I genuinely felt like my family and the world was better off without me. Suicide was the logical step.”

Following her husband’s safe return, Carrie wrote in her Journal column the incident helped her “begin to understand what it is to dwell in despair”.
