Students endure A second loss to Heed

GATESHEAD A picked up their first points and win of the season with a 5-2 victory at Newcastle University the same side they had knocked out of the Challenge Cup on penalties the previous weekend.

The Uni took the lead through Matthew Konadou-Yiadom inside two minutes, only for Matty Halliday to level on seven before Konadou-Yiadom struck his second just before the 20-minute mark.

The Heed, though, were buoyed by last weekend’s up upset and levelled again on 19 minutes through Kieron Green.

Second-half efforts from Dan Hailes, Liam Butler and Brandon Studhome gave them three points.

Shankhouse, the new leaders by two points, enjoyed a comfortabl­e win at FC United of Newcastle.

Christophe­r Marshall struck a first-half hat-trick, Leighton Bruce also netting before the break.

A late home consolatio­n arrived through Connor Docherty with seven minutes left, the hosts beaten 4-1.

Killingwor­th Town hit six in their home encounter with lowly North Shields Athletic as Jordan Miller, Sam Walker and Lee Waugh all bagged braces, the visitors’ reply an Owen Gorley penalty.

A brace from Connor Andrews and one for Dillon Williamson took Ashington Colliers to a 3-0 home success over Northbank.

Percy Main defeated Newbiggin 2-1 and the game between Wallington and Ponteland finished level at 2-2, Jordan Nellis netting twice for the hosts.

In the League Cup, both Premier Division sides progressed at the expense of lower opposition.

Birtley despatched Division Two leaders Blyth Spartans Reserves 3-0 at home with counters coming from Andy Hall inside the opening ten minutes and second-half efforts from Tony Smith and Jack Honour.

Gateshead Rutherford just edged their home tie 3-2 with Division One side New Fordley.

Sam Hodgson netted what proved the winner on 65 minutes after Steven Matthew had scored in each half for the hosts, Kieran Pyle pulling one back late in the first and Cameron Patrick making for a nervy finish with another four minutes from time.

In the Challenge Cup, Seaton Delaval eased to a 5-1 home triumph over Whitley Bay A.
