Scrappage scheme grows

- By STEVE HUGHES

VOLKSWAGEN is giving away up to a whopping £6,000 per vehicle in its scrappage scheme, which now includes the new Polo range for the first time.

The company is offering up to at least 10 times the actual value of some eligible vehicles, which must be old diesel models.

The idea is to drive the oldest and most polluting oil-burners off UK roads by giving owners the most generous financial incentives possible.

In the case of VW’s deal, old bangers with an actual value of about £600 could earn their owners up to £6,000 against the price of one of the most expensive new models.

The actual range of scrappage discounts starts at £1,800 for cheaper new models, if buyers have owned the scrappage vehicle for more than six months.

Now VW is including its bestselling Polo range in the scheme, which accepts old bangers of any make and model. As an added incentive, the company is also including a year’s insurance for drivers aged between 18 and 80.

The icing on the cake is a £500 deposit contribution for anyone who takes out a personal contract plan, with an interest rate of 5.9%.

The finance offers coincide with upgrades to the latest Polo range, which gain optional driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and front assist and rear traffic alert.

Safety is further enhanced with LED daytime-running lights across the range, while inside the car there is an 8in colour touchscreen. Built on a completely new platform, it provides more passenger and luggage space, with the boot volume increased by a quarter.

Available as an option on a Volkswagen supermini for the first time is the brand’s clever Active Info Display, which puts a highresolution screen in front of the driver in place of traditional analogue dials. This display can be customised to show a variety of information, such as speed, gear, economy figures, or, on Polo SEL versions, the satellite navigation directions or moving map.

First deliveries of the new Polo are due to arrive here in January.
