Reporter BOOZERS can raise their glasses after a popular pub was given a new lease of life.

The Gateshead Arms in Low Fell, said to be one of the busiest and loudest for weekend drinkers, is back after a makeover.

The venue has been given a stylish £250,000 makeover ahead of the festive season following a joint investment by publican Steve Barratt and national pub chain Punch.

The project has also created five new jobs for the local community.

The pub on Durham Road has been completely transformed with full redecoration, new furniture, fixtures and fittings and extended ladies and gents’ facilities.

In addition to an improved interior, the pub has also upgraded its drinks offer with plenty of premium brands and snacks.

Steve has been running the Gateshead Arms since 2005 and is delighted with the results of the makeover.

He said: “When I originally took over the pub I gave it a full makeover and over time we’ve redecorated but nothing has been done on this scale before. “It’s amazing what has been achieved in just four weeks – the pub looks great. “It has a more upmarket feel and the new drinks menu offers customers something different.” Customers at the pub can enjoy drinks from the ‘Grapes, Grains and Berries’ menu which includes traditional and frozen cocktails, premium Steve Barratt gins, rums and vodkas and a range of quality wines and fizz and cask and craft ales.

All drinks are served in attractive glassware that can be purchased for just £3 each with £1 going to the pub’s chosen charity, Macmillan.

Entertainment includes live sport and a pub quiz on Tuesdays.

Throughout the week various drinks promotions take place and customers can play ‘Push the Button’ at the bar where they can literally press a button to win special offers at the point of purchase.

Punch’s Tammy Molson said: “The Gateshead Arms has always been a popular pub and will continue to offer a more upbeat atmosphere at weekends.

“However, the refurbishment should appeal to those looking for a more relaxed place to enjoy a coffee or drink whilst catching up with friends and family.

“Steve and his team are dedicated to customer service and I’m confident they will make the new-look Gateshead Arms a great success.”
