HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD

PICK OF THE DAY

-

MAKING the most of their most recent signing, Channel 4 presents us with this treat of a show, that’s a bit like a Bake Off spin-off. It’s pitched as Paul Hollywood’s personal cookbook, and indeed he does share his favourite recipes from a lifetime of baking, as well as some amusing baby photos.

But it’s not all about ol’ blue eyes (you may or may not be pleased to hear) – a peek into Paul’s personal life is neatly entwined with some Bake Off

PAUL HOLLYWOOD: A BAKER’S LIFE

behind-the-scenes footage that fans will lap up.

It starts with grainy footage of Paul’s original screen test for Bake Off from 2010, which is hilarious for two reasons.

Firstly, he’s desperately scrambling for words about a basket of pale-looking supermarket bread. And secondly, he just looks shockingly different – younger obviously, but scruffier and not so sure of himself.

Meanwhile, former Bake Off contestants Val and Selasi challenge Paul to make a roulade in the tent, plus there’s more larking about as Noel Fielding, Sandi Toksvig and Prue Leith help him bake and decorate a celebration cake.

There’s also unseen audition footage from when Paul and Mary Berry first met – hard to imagine how that fairly unexciting tape escalated into one of the biggest shows on British television.
