Hunt goes on for pair who robbed van

-

POLICE are still hunting two offenders who it is believed could be armed after a G4S security van was hijacked in Newcastle.

Two suspects allegedly robbed the truck in broad daylight in the car park of Asda, Lemington, at around 2.10pm on December 2.

Witnesses at the scene said they believed the attackers were armed with a gun and officers from Northumbria Police are continuing to look for those responsible.

After holding up the security van in the busy car park, the two suspects are said to have escaped on a motorbike.

In the aftermath of the robbery, a witness told the Chronicle: “Me and my boyfriend were pulling into the car park and I noticed two people on a motorbike that we parked right next to.

“They seemed to be having problems with it and then one of them suddenly ran to the G4S van.”

The witness said the two assailants were wearing bike helmets throughout the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “We would appeal to anyone who saw those involved, the motorbike or anything suspicious to get in touch.

“People in the area can expect to see an increased police presence while we conduct our enquiries.”

Witnesses or anybody with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 617 of December 2, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
