VW extends scrappage scheme

- By STEVE HUGHES

VOLKSWAGEN is giving away up to £6,000 off the price of some of its cars as part of an extended scrappage scheme.

As is so often the case, the scrappage scheme that was originally for a limited time only, will now run until the beginning of April.

Instead of scrapping the scrappage just before Christmas, it means that those who sign up for a new vehicle will not have to take delivery until the end of June.

Discounts range from £1800 off the VW up! to a maximum of £6,000 in the case of the Sharan.

In reality, generous discounts are already available off the advertised prices anyway, especially in the case of those with diesel engines.

Nonetheless, under the terms of the scrappage scheme, the discounts are transparent and do not need to be haggled for, which some buyers find intimidating.

The company says that 5,000 older diesel vehicles that comply with pre-Euro 51 emissions legislation, and registered before 2010, have already been removed from the road since the scheme was launched int he UK in September.

The trade-in vehicle needs to have been owned by the customer for at least six months, and there are also new discounts for anyone buying electric and hybrid vehicles.

Volkswagen has stated that it aims to be the global leader in electric vehicles by 2025. The brand says it is working hard on a comprehensive electric car offensive.

Underpinning this is a dedicated electric vehicle structure called the modular electric drive kit, which forms the basis of an innovative range of electric vehicles including the I.D. and I.D. BUZZ, both of which are now confirmed for production.

Savings on current models amount to as much as £8,500 in the case of the electric Golf, thanks to scrappage of £4,000 plus the taxpayer-funded Government grant of £4,500 off the maker’s list price.
