Boy, 9, found safe after police search

-

A SEARCH was launched over fears a nine-year-old boy had been swept into the sea.

Fearing the worst after the child had been seen playing near the waves on the Whitburn promenade in Sunderland, dozens of police officers, the coastguard, RNLI, the fire service and the national police air service, as well as members of the public, all joined the search.

A family member found the boy making his way home unharmed shortly after the alarm was raised.

Police were called to the scene at 2.23pm yesterday. Superintendent Mick Paterson said: “There was a substantial police presence in the area as we launched an extensive search for the boy and I would like to thank members of the public who went out of their way to help us.”
