Much-depleted Spartans prove no answer to a rampant Bromley

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans crashed out of the Buildbase FA Trophy at the second-round stage after they lost 4-1 at home to Bromley.

The Ravens’ extra quality was especially evident in the final third as they scored twice in each half.

Josh Rees and the dangerous Louis Dennis both grabbed doubles, Greg Rutherford with the Spartans’ consolation goal when they were three down.

Blyth needed to be at full strength against National League outfit Bromley but instead were without a number of key players.

Leading scorer Dan Maguire and the versatile Sean Reid were both injured, while talisman Robbie Dale was unavailable.

Schemer Lewis Horner was another absentee, leaving Blyth boss Alun Armstrong with the bare bones from which to select.

Armstrong said: “Bromley are a good side and they gave us a glimpse of what Conference Premier football is about.

“They did not have that many efforts at goal but were clinical and they got through our patched-up midfield too easily.

“The margin of defeat was harsh but if we had been able to field our first-choice side we would have caused them more problems”
