Wearmen see red over Ndong dismissal - and will appeal

-

SUNDERLAND will appeal against the red card handed to Didier Ndong in yesterday’s 4-0 defeat at Cardiff City, writes JAMES HUNTER.

The midfielder was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Junior Hoilett just four minutes into the second half at South Wales.

Black Cats’ boss Chris Coleman felt referee Andy Madley’s decision was harsh, Ndong getting his foot on the ball before catching Hoilett with the follow-through.

The Wearsiders will now lodge an appeal against the threematch ban which accompanies the dismissal.

Coleman said: “The sending off - sometimes they are given, sometimes they are not.

“The referee has a decision to make and then you are on a wing and a prayer.

“You can look at it two ways, his studs are up on to the ball, then his foot hits the ball and then the Cardiff boy quite high.”

As it stands, that ban would rule Ndong out of the crucial relegation clashes against Hull City at the Stadium of Light next weekend and at Birmingham City on January 30, as well as the home game against Ipswich Town on February 3.

Ndong wants to leave the club and Sunderland have had enquiries about him - but they have knocked back Watford’s loan proposal.

The Black Cats would ideally prefer to sell him this month - or at the very least agree a loan deal which will become permanent in the summer.
