Police name woman killed in house fire

A WOMAN whose body was found following a fire at a house in Gateshead has been named as Christine Markham.

The 53-year-old’s body was discovered in a property in Robson’s Way, Birtley, on Thursday, February 1.

Firefighte­rs were called to the three-storey house at around 12.05am after the blaze broke out.

Neighbours described seeing plumes of smoke billowing from the roof of the house while fire crews tackled the blaze.

A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder but he has been released under investigat­ion.

Inspector Paul Waugh, of Northumbri­a Police, said: “Enquiries to establish the circumstan­ces around Christine’s death are ongoing.

“A 61-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death on Thursday but he has since been released under investigat­ion.

“Christine’s family are currently being supported by specialist liaison officers at what is an incredibly difficult time for them and they ask that their privacy is respected.

“Police will continue to have a visible presence in the area around the address to reassure anyone who has any concerns, but there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.”
