Worker threatened with gun during petrol station robbery

A petrol station worker was threatened at gunpoint during an early-morning armed robbery in Newcastle.

Police were called to the Shell garage on Benton Park Road in South Gosforth at around 6.15am yesterday.

The forecourt was taped off for more than two hours after police arrived on the scene.

A man entered the garage with what it believed to be a gun and threatened the male staff member who was on duty at the time.

He was able to steal a quantity of cash before making off.

The male staff member was threatened but was not injured during the robbery, Northumbri­a Police said.

Police are now carrying out a manhunt looking for the robber.

The man, who had his face covered, fled on foot in the direction of the Haddricks Mill roundabout.

He is described as white, 5ft 8ins, of stocky build and had a local accent.

He was wearing jeans and a grey hoody with a gilet over the top. He was wearing his hood up and had his face covered.

A cordon was removed by police at around 8.50am after an initial investigat­ion.

Staff at the petrol station said they were now open for business as usual following the disruption.
