GLYNWOOD JUMP THROUGH HOOPS AFTER FINAL WIN
THE last of the Hoops4Health finalists – featuring primary schools from Gateshead – was played prior to the Newcastle Eagles’ BBL clash with Bristol Flyers.
Last year’s winners Crookhill were joined by St Agnes, Glynwood and St Peter’s.
In the first semi-final Glynwood took an early lead after just two minutes against St Agnes.
Ivy Road were unable to find the equaliser, Glynwood grabbing another basket after seven minutes and recording a 4-0 victory.
The second semi-final proved an exciting game.
St Peter’s took the intial lead almost two minutes in.
Crookhill managed to net a basket after three minutes but St Peter’s pulled away again just 30 seconds later.
Crookhill did not stay trailing for too long, equalising after another 30 seconds.
However, it only took a further 30 seconds for current holders Crookhill to sink another basket – giving them the advantage for the first time in the game.
After a frantic three minutes of end-to-end scoring, Crookhill went into the final for the second year running.
The decider took place during the half-time break in the Eagles’ clash, Glynwood dominating throughout.
Shot after shot went up for Glynwood but they just could not get a shot to drop.
In the dying seconds of the match Crookhill made a surge for a basket and went close on two occasions.
The only basket scored in the game by Glynwood was cancelled out after a travelling violation was called – so both teams were sent through to the shoot-out.
Glynwood hit their first shot which Crookhill could not match.
Glynwood then missed their second shot, giving Crookhill their final lifeline.
Unfortunately for the current title holders they were unable to match Glynwood and a new Gateshead champion was crowned.
All four teams were brought on to court to be presented with their relevant medals.
The presentations were made by Gateshead Housing.
Glynwood will now progress to the Champion of Champions final in May.
