I’m so happy doomsayers were wrong

- By LEE RYDER

RAFA Benitez believes Newcastle United have proved a lot of people wrong this season in the Premier League.

The Magpies staved off relegation weeks ago and were aiming to finish the season on a high against Chelsea at St James’ Park in the final game of the campaign.

Benitez is still waiting to firm up a contract extension with United but is expected to touch base with managing-director Lee Charnley this week as the pair look to gain approval from Mike Ashley on a spending plan for this summer’s transfer window.

Speaking in his programme notes before the game with the Blues, Benitez said: “I don’t know anyone who thought at the beginning of this season we could finish near the top 10.

“If things worked out differently, we could have been going into this fixture under pressure to avoid relegation.

“Fortunately, we are not and we have to realise how important this group of players’ efforts have been in the last 10 months.”

Benitez is hoping fans can look back on the campaign for all the right reasons after securing top-flight safety early and enjoying big wins over Manchester United and Arsenal at St James’.

He added: “It is important for us to keep the good memories we have taken from this season.

“It has been a great one from a very professional group of players and, along with the staff, fans and city, everyone has come together to get behind us. We have to be proud of that.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank every fan who has supported the team, all the members of my staff – coaching and medical staff – and everyone who has worked so hard behind the scenes.

“I’d also like to thank the players for their commitment and passion.”
