Gos enjoying that Champion feeling

SCHOOLS FOOTBALL

-

BENFIELD School hosted the Newcastle Schools’ Under-11 Girls Champions Cup final.

This was a round-robin tournament with the four qualifiers having come through their respective city leagues.

Gosforth Junior took on holders St Mark’s in the first game and they emerged 3-0 victors while St Teresa’s and St. lban’s played out a 0-0 draw.

In the second-round games St Teresa’s beat St Mark’s 2.0 and Gosforth Junior defeated St Alban’s 2-0.

This took it to a final decider between Gosforth Junior and St Teresa’s.

Gosforth were quickly on top, being inspired by Chloe Paxton in the centre of midfield.

They went one up before adding a second goal just before half-time.

Gosforth notched a third before St Teresa’s pulled a goal back from a free-kick.

St Alban’s beat St Mark’s 2.0 to finish on the same points as St Teresa’s but behind them in the final table on goals scored.

Organiser Ian Beck said: “The standard of the competition this season was very high and Gosforth were worthy winners.”

FOR the first time ever the Newcastle Schools’ King Cup was played as a round-robin tournament at Walker Technology College.

This brought together the four city league winners.

Gosforth East, after having won the Simpson League, went into the competition as slight favourites.

East were shocked when Hilton took an early lead and dominated the early minutes.

Gosforth, however, gradually got on top and scored twice just before half-time. They added to it in the second half to make it 3-1 at the end.

The other game saw English Martyr’s dominate for long periods but they could not find a way past the Ravenswood defence.

Finally, in the second half Leon Burke scored to make it 1-0.

Just before time Ravenswood broke and equalised. Ravenswood then put in a great performance against Gosforth but they still went down 1-0.

English Martyr’s game against Hilton was similar as the first clash in that they had a lot of possession.

They went 1-0 up thanks to a great long-range effort from Charlie Glasgow before being pegged back to 1-1.

The draw meant Gosforth East became champions with a game to spare.

In the last matches, Gosforth East defeated English Martyr’s 1-0 while Ravenswood defeated Hilton 2-1 to take second place overall.

This victory meant Gosforth East have won the trophy in three of the last four years.
