Arsonists strike on a suburban city street
FLAMES destroyed two cars as arsonists struck in the middle of the night.
Neighbours on Powburn Gardens in Fenham, Newcastle, were awoken at 2.30am yesterday morning as two cars were set alight on the street.
A number of wheelie bins and a skip were also targeted in the malicious arson attack.
One of the cars was left blackened with a collapsed bonnet and smashed window in the aftermath of the fire.
Firefighters were called at around 2.30am and extinguished the car and bin fires.
Officers from Northumbria Police are now investigating and said they believe the fires were deliberately started and were linked.
A spokesperson said: “At around 2.35am today, police received reports of a vehicle fire on Powburn Gardens in Fenham.
“Police and the fire service attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
“The fire is currently being treated as suspicious.
“While at the scene officers were also made aware of another vehicle that had been set on fire as well as a number of wheelie bins.
“Inquiries into all of the incidents are ongoing but police do believe they could be linked.
“Anyone with information should contact us by calling 101 quoting log 0073 18/05/18.”
A spookesman for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service said the fires were being treated as “suspected malicious ignition”.
