THE BATTLE FOR BRITAIN’S HEROES Tuesday, Channel 4, 9pm

BRITS are proud of their past. We celebrate our island nation that ruled the waves, triumphed over its enemies and built an empire. But around the world, people are challenging how nations deal with the darker side of their history, including involvement with slavery, racism or colonialism. With this in mind, writer and journalist Afua Hirsch believes Britain needs to question some of the uncomfortable aspects of our heroes, and has suggested bringing statues of some of the country’s greatest heroes tumbling down. In this programme, she is met with opposition as she confronts Horatio Nelson’s pro-slavery views and Winston Churchill’s views on race, and visits Germany to see if we can learn from how it has addressed its own dark past.
