Young is back with an old classic

-

PAUL Young is set to reignite the Love of the Common People following the announcement that the Eighties favourite will be playing Newcastle later this year.

The singer has announced a tour stop-off in the city to perform his album No Parlez in celebration of its 35-year anniversary.

He will be at Tyne Theatre & Opera House on October 10 and tickets went on sale yesterday.

Young, winner of a Brit Award for best male vocalist, was a stand-out solo star of 80s pop, whose soaring vocals in songs such as Wherever I Lay My Hat; Love of the Common People and Come Back and Stay formed the backdrop to the big pub and club nights out across the country.

Those three hits all featured on debut No Parlez which was released in 1983 – the first of Young’s three UK number-one albums – and it helped make him a household name.

Besides being a regular in the top 10, he is remembered as the voice which opened 1985 Band Aid hit Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Now the enduring talent, who on other occasions tours with his Tex Mex-Americana band Los Pacaminos, will be transporting fans back to the glory days with a celebration of the album which stayed number one in the UK charts in 1983 for five weeks.

No Parlez fast became triple-platinum and – as well as those hits such as his cover of Marvin Gaye’s Wherever I Lay My Hat which became his first number one single – it includes the popular cover of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Tyne Theatre director Joanne Johnson was delighted to announce Young’s Newcastle date. She said: “Paul Young joins an everexpanding music programme at Tyne Theatre – our line-up also includes the likes of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, The Feeling, Afro Celt Sound System and loads more. “I’m especially excited to see Paul Young – he was one of my favourites when I was growing up!” Tickets, priced at £43 for platinum seats, £30.50 for standard and £20.50 for restricted view seats. ■ ■There is also a booking and information line available which is open from 10am Monday to Friday: 0844 2491 000.
