Shutting up shop in Newcastle 35 years ago
GENERATIONS of Newcastle folk have gazed upon this unchanged corner view of Grainger Street.
Readers might well remember this building as the home of Wengers - a four-floor department store which flourished from the early 1960s until 1983 when a decline in trade saw it close.
Completed in 1886, the grade-II listed building has hosted a popular Yates’s bar since 1999.
In its early incarnations, it was home to the Abyssinian Gold Jewellery Company Ltd, and the Newcastle and Gateshead Gas Company.
