Former Devils keeper on trial with Wearsiders
SUNDERLAND are running the rule over former Manchester United goalkeeper Max Johnstone.
The 19-year-old shot-stopper is currently on trial with the Black Cats having been released by the Old Trafford outfit this summer.
Johnstone played 45 minutes for Sunderland’s under-23s on Thursday night as they defeated Northern League outfit Sunderland RCA 4-2.
Johnstone was a regular for the Red Devils’ under-18s after joining the club in 2016, while he also made appearances for their second string too.
Coming from a family of shot-stoppers, his older brother Sam Johnstone is also an ex-United goalkeeper. He’s just signed for West Brom this summer having spent last season on loan at Aston Villa.
The Wearsiders are currently taking a look at the younger Johnstone sibling with their youth ranks currently short of goalkeepers.
Max Stryjek is training with the first team. James Talbot was released this summer, while New Zealander Michael Woud has joined Netherlands top-flight side Willem II.
Johnstone was one of four trialists in action for Elliott Dickman’s side at RCA.
Striker Liam Millar looks set to join the club after leaving Liverpool.
