Plans set to fall over the Edge

- By CHRIS BINDING

Local democracy reporter A MAJOR seafront development on the site of a former South Shields pub is set for rejection over concerns over its impact on seafront views and wildlife.

Next week, councillors will discuss the future of the Waters Edge pub at Trow Lea, which faces being bulldozed to make way for a 23-apartment, threestorey complex.

The plans – which include detached garage blocks, car parking, a detached bin store and vehicle access – have attracted more than 300 objections.

Now South Tyneside Council officers are calling for members to reject the plans over their visual impact on the foreshore area and Grade II-listed Trow Rock floating platform gun.

A report notes the “excessive height, scale and density and incongruous appearance” of the plans as a reason for rejection alongside impact on wildlife areas and sites of special scientific interest as well as the lack of affordable housing.

A 21-apartment plan was originally lodged by the owner of the pub Kevin Brogan in November 2015 but was withdrawn in February 2016.

The second set of plans, designed by Houghton-based architect John Waugh, have since attracted opposition over their scale.

South Tyneside Council leader Iain Malcolm has objected to the proposals, which he argues would clash with the council and National Trust’s “vision” for the foreshore area.

Architect John Waugh was not available for comment when contacted.

A final decision is due from the council on Tuesday.
