Film event recalls Tyneside’s past

-

TYNESIDE on Film makes a welcome return to Newcastle next week. Covering over 90 years of footage, the city centre event is an opportunity to look back and see movie superstars Laurel and Hardy visiting Tynemouth; the resilience of the people in Gateshead during the Second World War; the ships that grew from the yards; a day at the races; the Hoppings; local television news stories and much more.

It takes place at the Tyneside Cinema on Pilgrim Street, and features fantastic content from the North East Film Archive (NEFA).

Tyneside On Film forms part of North East on Film, a project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to ensure we preserve, digitise and create opportunities for everyone to see and enjoy archive film collections made in or about communities across the North East of England.

For Tyneside on Film, the archive team has created a medley of new material for audiences to enjoy, with amateur and professional films, travelogues, animation and Tyne Tees TV clips never seen before on the big screen all brought together to tell the story of Tyneside communities on both sides of the river.

North East Film Archive Manager Graham Relton said: “NEFA are delighted to return to Tyneside Cinema with more films from the vaults. In this Tyneside collection we want people to laugh, cry and be amazed at some of the things they can see on screen and which happened right here on their doorstep over the decades.

“Our greatest challenge is what to leave out rather than what to include, but we’re confident we’ve curated a screening that has something for all, whether you’re a Geordie or not.”

Holli Keeble, Tyneside Cinema’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’ve had fabulous reactions to the North East Film Archive events over the last few years, with more than 1,000 people coming to see the first Newcastle on Film screening.

“Much of what we do at Tyneside Cinema celebrates the rich history of film and the heritage of our building as a former newsreel theatre, and so we’re delighted to welcome NEFA back for their new Tyneside on Film programme.”

■■The Tyneside on Film screenings take place at the Tyneside Cinema on Wednesday, October 10 at 3.30pm and 6.10pm. There will be a special Dementia Friendly screening of the programme on Thursday, October 25, at 1.30pm.

■■Tickets can be bought by calling the cinema’s box office on 0191 227 5500.
