Squad to bring cheer to beaches

CHEERLEADERS from two North East teams will be swapping back flipping for litter picking on Saturday as they tackle trash at some of the region’s most-loved beaches.

And while doing their bit for the environment, they will also be raising funds towards their epic journey to the US cheerleading finals in Florida next year with donations used to help pay for uniforms, entry fees, music and kits.

Following their triumph at the JAMfest European Competition in Liverpool, where over 150 teams competed, two teams from the North East Cheer Allstars, Team Dazzle and Team Quartz, have qualified to represent UK at the world’s largest All-Star cheerleading competition – The Summit – at the ESPN arena in Disneyworld Florida in May 2019.

But before that, Team Dazzle (South Tyneside & Wearside), who train at Temple Park, will be conducting a litter pick on South Shields beach, between 10am and midday on Saturday, starting at Little Haven beach.

Meanwhile, Team Quartz (Newcastle & North Tyneside), who train at Ouseburn Community Centre in Heaton, will be litter picking between 10am and midday on Saturday on Whitley Bay Beach, starting at the Di Meo’s ice cream kiosk located in front of Spanish City.

Both teams will have collection buckets for members of the public to show their support.

North East Cheer Allstars head coach Rachel Lynch said: “We are incredibly proud of all of our teams and their successes over last season. It is fantastic that we have two teams going through to take part in The Summit.

“We believe in providing a safe fun and positive environment for children within the North East to learn, keep fit and build self-confidence. We hope to see lots of people on the beaches on Saturday, and value any support members of the public can give our athletes.”

Donations are also being accepted through their North East Charity Sports Challenge 2018 fundraising page where Metro Radio Cash for Kids and the LGA Foundation will match funding raised up to the value of £2,500.
