Window on the festive world
SO last week we revealed one of the year’s best-kept secrets – the date for Fenwick’s Christmas Window being revealed.
Yes, the Tyneside festive institution is returning for another year from Friday, November 2 – it would not be a Geordie Christmas without it would it?
As ever, this year’s theme is shrouded in secrecy but that has not stopped Chronicle readers from speculating about what will be adorning the windows this time around.
Fenwick’s Christmas Window themes are known for being really eclectic.
The first animated window display in 1971 saw Camberwick Green come to life at the Northumberland Street department store and since then the inspirations have been wideranging.
Fairytales have served Fenwick well over the years with the likes of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan delighting families, while pantomimes have also proved popular.
Traditional Christmas themes like Santa’s workshop and A Christmas Carol have captured the imagination and who can forget the very left of centre Christmas in Another World aka the aliens in 2002!
Last year saw a display themed around Paddington Bear so will we get a slice of something traditional this year or will Fenwick take inspiration from modern pop culture or the realm of fairytales?
Well if you want to find out first, the big reveal will be at 5pm on Friday, with build-up starting a few hours before and large queues expected to secure a prime sport for the curtain drop. SIMON DUKE
