Bay progress in cup after beating rivals

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

WHITLEY Bay came out on top in the North Tyneside derby as they saw off local rivals North Shields in the Second Round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup.

Former Robins midfielder Ben Richardson put the Bay ahead on 25 minutes and they took a two-goal advantage into half-time thanks to a goal from Luke Salmon just after the half-hour mark.

Both sides created second-half chances, but neither could add to the scoring and it was the hosts that made it into the third round and took the local bragging rights.

Hebburn Town were sent tumbling out of the competition by West Allotment Celtic. The two sides couldn’t break the deadlock in 90 minutes and it was the visitors that progressed with a 4-1 win in a penalty shoot-out.

Cup holders Dunston UTS won’t be retaining their trophy after falling to a 2-0 defeat at West Auckland Town.

Adam Burnicle grabbed his first goal for West since returning to the club to give them a first-half lead and midfielder Alex Francis sealed the win ten minutes from time.

Northern League Division Two promotion chasers Heaton Stannington pulled off a shock win at Division One club Ashington as winger Lewis Burns got the only goal of the game at Woodhorn Lane.

A brave display from Northallerton Town wasn’t enough to stop Consett progressing as goals from Michael Sweet and Michael Mackay gave the Steelmen a 2-1 win at Belle View.

An injury-time penalty from Michael Hepplewhite helped Chester-le-Street Town progress against Durham City.

A first-half goal from Dylan Williamson looked to have put Bedlington Terriers on their way to a surprise win at Newton Aycliffe.

But two goals in the last ten minutes from Matty Pennal and Liam Browne helped the Division One side avert a shock home defeat.

Evo-Stik League East clubs Morpeth Town and Marske United moved into the Third Round of the Integro League Cup.

Morpeth eased to a 2-0 home win against league rivals Brighouse Town thanks to goals from Wayne Phillips and Jack Foalle.

And Marske will join them in the draw after Callum Martin, Jamie Owens and Craig Gott found the target in their 3-1 win at Sheffield FC.
