BRITAIN’S MOST HAUNTED? THESE ARE THE PLACES WHERE PEOPLE ARE MOST LIKELY TO REPORT SEEING A GHOST

- By MICHAEL GOODIER

YOU are more likely to encounter a ghost or a UFO than a werewolf in the British Isles.

That’s according to data from The Paranormal Database - a collection of historical and recent spooky sightings that have taken place in the UK and Ireland.

London is the most haunted city, with 622 instances of paranormal activity recorded in the capital.

It’s followed by Brighton, with 140, and Edinburgh, with 95 freaky phenomena.

There have been 74 odd occurrences in York, and 71 in Bristol.

The Paranormal Database contains reports of nearly 16,000 paranormal events across the UK and Ireland, and includes the location, the time and other details of what was seen.

Reports include stories of strange creatures such as sea monsters, and cursed objects that cause misfortune if moved from the buildings housing them.

According to the website, there have been nearly 10,000 “haunting manifestations” in the British Isles, dating all the way back to the ninth century.

Fairies (442 sightings), UFOs (306) and dragons (183) are just some of the other strange sights detailed in the database.

However, there have been relatively few instances of vampires (33) and werewolves (31), and only 12 sightings of spontaneous human combustion.

Some claim to have seen the ghosts of famous dead and historical figures.

Jack The Ripper, Oliver Cromwell and Guy Fawkes are just some of the names that appear in the database.

The floating head of Oliver Cromwell is said to haunt the grounds of Sydney Sussex College in Cambridge, and can be seen peering into windows.

In 2012, a group of Chinese tourists claimed to have spotted the ghost of Princess Diana, standing by a stainedglass window in a Glasgow church.

Other phenomena include a ghostly matron who stalks the corridors of Cardiff Royal Infirmary Hospital, and a wine connoisseur phantom nicknamed “corky”, who occasionally smashes cheap bottles of wine in the cellar of the Court Oak pub in Birmingham. Many of the reports simply detail “strange bangs” and the sound of footsteps, and so perhaps have a more reasonable explanation than the supernatural.
