He can’t drive – but he CAN speed

- By IAN JOHNSON Reporter Johnnie Keenan said he panicked when he saw the police

HE took police on a reckless highspeed police chase before he even had a licence.

But teenager Johnnie Keenan will STILL be allowed to sit his driving test.

A court heard aged just 17, Keenan overtook a car on the wrong side of the road during the pursuit around Gateshead.

Cameras clocked him doing 55mph in a 30mph zone in a black Renault Clio.

Yet he has been given the green light to sit his driving test - despite being slapped with seven points on his provisional licence.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard how police chased him from a Felling bypass junction through ‘built up housing estates’ on October 14.

Police pursued him after noticing his dodgy driving. After requesting for him to stop, he sped away.

Keenan made his way through bus lanes and streets, eventually stopping in Kirkwood Gardens.

Keenan - who has since turned 18 apologised for his actions as he represented himself in court.

“I just panicked when I saw the police,” he explained, admitting his actions were “stupid”.

“I didn’t know what to do.” He admitted driving without a licence, insurance or without due care and attention, while he also pleaded guilty to failing to stop.

Magistrates slapped the Hayton House, Wardley, teenager with a combined £413 fine while ordering him to pay £85 costs and a £41 charge - reduced due to his early guilty plea.

His licence was endorsed with seven points - although a court official told him he “can still sit” his test although any more points could result in more action.
