Funny men will get us laughing
A charity comedy night taking place on International Men’s Day will be headlined by top comedian – and TV regular – Dane Baptiste.
The gig, which is being held at The Stand Comedy Club in Newcastle on the evening of Monday, November 19, also boasts North East comedy heroes Lee Kyle, Matt Reed and Hal Branson on the bill.
Meanwhile, top storyteller and MC extraordinaire, Lou Conran, will be on hand to keep everyone laughing – as well as keeping the lads in line – making sure everyone has a fantastically funny night safe in the knowledge that they’re also raising much-needed money for a great cause.
All the proceeds from the event will be going to Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland, which is marking its 40th anniversary by doing its best to raise £40k in 2018.
London-born Dane Baptiste made history in 2014 when he became the first black British act to be nominated for the Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Fringe.
He also boasts a long list of credits including hosting Live at the Apollo on BBC Two, his own sitcom Sunny D, and multiple appearances on the likes of Mock the Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Tonight at the London Palladium and Live from the Comedy Store.
Dane says he’s thrilled to be heading up proceedings for such an important charity.
“I’m very excited to be part of this show, and for the opportunity to raise awareness for this issue,” he said. “Over 70% of women are subjected to some form of sexual trauma before they’re 19, and we need to address and stop all sexual abuse.
“Hopefully, we can provide enough support and laughter to help raise spirits and awareness!”
Hal Branson, an established comedian on the North East comedy circuit who has recently enjoyed support slots for Dylan Moran and Sam Simmons, added: “I’m very honoured to be involved in this event, highlighting the incredible work of this amazing charity.
“In the current climate it’s really important that awareness is raised around the issues that Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland deal with, and the support they offer to people in community who have suffered.
“The line-up of comedians for the evening are a must see and it’s a great opportunity to raise money and enjoy a great night’s entertainment.”
Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland is one of the oldest Rape Crisis centres in the UK. They provide independent advice, support and counselling for women and girls over 13 who have experienced sexual violence at any time in their lives.
