Williamson’s delight after league award
MIKE Williamson has spoken of his delight at receiving a prestigious award early in his Gateshead career.
The former Newcastle defender celebrated his 35th birthday by being named Vanarama National League Player of the Month.
Williamson joined Gateshead at the start of the season from Oxford United and made his debut in the third game.
A 2-1 win over Dover Athletic at the International Stadium got his Heed career off to a flyer in August.
It took the Stoke-born centreback time to get up to speed but he is now a regular in the Heed back line.
During October he was at the heart of a defence that produced four clean sheets in five outings.
Four of those games were won and only one goal conceded as Gateshead remain on the fringe of the play-offs.
Speaking of his reward Williamson said: “It’s great, but more of a reflection on how the team is doing.
“As a defender I’m not out there scoring goals, but keeping clean sheets is a testament to the whole team.
“The manager has got us solid as a team. October went very well. I feel I’m getting fitter and we’re growing as a squad.
“It’s just finding the formula of keeping that consistency. I look after myself and feel fresh after every game.”
Williamson, also Gateshead’s player of the month, was a highprofile signing by manager Steve Watson, who has been delighted with his contribution.
“We had to be patient to get Mike on board,” said Watson, “and he hadn’t played for a long time, so had to build up his fitness.
“He’s benefited from a good run in the side. He has led the back line superbly, and his experience is invaluable.”
