City students a league apart

-

EARLY-SEASON success by many of its sports teams has cemented Newcastle University in the top 10 of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) League.

With the new BUCS season well underway, several squads are on top of their respective leagues - some achieving a perfect winning record in the process.

Teams with unbeaten runs include men’s basketball seconds, women’s hockey firsts, lacrosse women’s firsts, men’s rugby union firsts, men’s table tennis firsts and seconds and men’s volleyball firsts.

Newcastle University entered 81 teams into the BUCS League programme for the 2018-19 campaign.

They have secured 237 wins so far this season, with 174 defeats and 23 draws, making their win rate 55%.

Fraser Kennedy, Performance Sport Manager at Newcastle University, said: “I am delighted with the start to the season.

“I think that is testament to all the hard work from our student athletes and all the coaches who meticulously planned pre-season so we hit the season running.

“It is a big operation we run at Newcastle now and it is vital everything is planned carefully.

“Hopefully we can keep this momentum going but one cannot fault the desire and commitment of everyone involved in our goal to ensure Newcastle University remains at the forefront of university sport.”

With Christmas and the end of term in sight, Team Newcastle is poised to build on its winning record ahead of BUCS Big Wednesday.

Taking place in Nottingham in March, BUCS Big Wednesday is the culmination of the team sport league programme and the event will see more than 60 of the UK’s top university teams compete for championship and trophy titles.

If the teams extend their winning record, Newcastle University is on track to score a top-10 finish for the fourth year in a row, strengthening its position as one of the most successful sporting universities in the UK.
