Scepticism from Shearer on buyout talk

ALAN Shearer says he hopes there is substance to the latest round of takeover talk – but admits he is not getting excited about the prospect of an end to 11 years of Mike Ashley.

Shearer has been a prominent critic of Unted’s owner in recent years and his immediate reaction to the news – revealed by the owner himself on TV – was that it was the usual spin before the January transfer window.

Now he has expanded on that theory, saying he has “heard it all before.”

Shearer said: “I cannot get excited at all about the potential takeover at Newcastle.

“We have been there before and heard it all before.

“It seems these rumours always happen to resurface around the January transfer window and it is a bit like Groundhog Day to be honest.

“That said, it is definitely muchneeded so I hope his time there does end up being more substance behind the rumours.”

Shearer is more enthused about on-field matters, though, hailing United for their fight in grinding out a point against Everton after disappointment against West Ham.

He added: “On the pitch, they have been putting together some much better results after a tricky start to the season.

“They came unstuck against West Ham but they bounced back with a good point at Everton, so overall there has been much more promise - and that has been great to see.”
