CHIPPY’S FESTIVE MENU IS A HIT WITH CUSTOMERS

A TYNESIDE chippy has managed to somehow stuff a few more calories into Christmas.

Fenham Fish Bar has brought out deep fried Pigs in Blankets.

And people – unsurprisi­ngly – are going mad for them.

“We’ve sold hundreds already,” said owner Doug Gorman.

“The demand has been ridiculous and people really have been loving them.”

It is a safe bet to say the treat – being sold in pairs for £2.50 – isn’t diet friendly.

It consists of a sausage, wrapped in bacon, dipped in batter and fried in a vat of oil.

Doug has no idea how many calories are in it, but adds: “It is appalling – but it is Christmas!

“When we put them out, we thought we would maybe do 10 of them, but people have been going mad for them.

“People are having them as a little extra with the fish and chips, a Christmas treat.” The shop’s festive menu also includes Christmas brownies and homemade sausage stuffing.

‘annus horribilis.’

A devastatin­g fire ripped through the Stamfordha­m Road shop in February, gutting it.

The takeaway was forced to close for much of the year as it was revamped.

But punters – craving their favourite chippy – queued for around an hour when it reopened in August, giving the new look shop the thumbs up.

Months on, Doug proudly boasts: “We are busier than we have ever been.”

The festive fried delight will be on sale until the shop closes for Christmas on December 22.
