Mags’ target Miguel in vow to MLS side
MIGUEL Almiron has vowed to return to Atlanta United for ‘pre-season’ despite interest from Newcastle United and several other European sides.
The Paraguayan attacker played a key role in Atlanta’s MLS Cup win this weekend over Portland Timber – whipping in the free-kick which eventually fell to Franco Escobar to net the winner – and he spoke briefly about his future after the final whistle.
He said: “I am coming back in pre-season.
“When I got to Atlanta I did not think we would enjoy all this.
“It is beautiful what I have lived here and what I am living here.
“More for the people, you feel the love. I want to thank them for that.”
Pre-season for MLS teams is before the closure of the winter transfer window.
However, his teammate – former Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan – suggested the MLS Cup win may very well be Almiron’s final game for Atlanta United.
Guzan said: “His legacy, his impact on the game and on the city is huge.
“Whatever happens with Miguel, we wish him all the best. He has been a fantastic servant of this club, of the city.
“He deserves everything he is going to get in his career on an individual basis. I could not be happier for him – if this is the end for him – to be able to send him off as a champion.”
Guzan has previously spoken positively about Newcastle, and St James’ Park - labelling it one of the best top-flight stadiums he has ever played in.
United have been linked with a move for Almiron but manager Rafa Benitez has so far remained coy on those stories.
