Fears that village will be overrun if permission is granted for homes

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF 1,000 NEW HOMES TO BE CONSIDERED

FAMILIES fear that plans to build up to 1,000 homes on the outskirts of Newcastle will see village roads overrun and wildlife harmed.

Development giant Banks Property has unveiled its ‘Kingston Village’ scheme with a series of community meetings, before seeking planning permission next year,

It wants to build on a 49-hectare site that sits to the west of Brunton Lane, the road between Dinnington and Kingston Park.

If permission is granted it will will build up to 1,000 homes alongside shops, a primary school and a “village green”.

Banks said more than 100 people attended meetings in the area and following them, the company said it has had its first enquiries from people interested in living in the planned development, and that local feedback will be considered in the plans.

But when plans went on display at the Memorial Institute in Dinnington, many who turned out expressed their concerns.

Sandra Cowie, 71, said: “I’m totally opposed to it this is just a little village, and that road where they’re going to develop is just a little country lane.

“This village has nearly doubled in size in the last year, there’s already too much traffic.”

Sandra, who has lived in Dinnington for around four years, said she moved there because it was a “nice, quiet village” - but even in that short time a number of nearby developments have, she said, changed the feeling of the area.

She added: “I’m so glad I’m retired, I don’t like to think what it will be like in the mornings once this is done.” Jean and Malcolm Paisley shared her concerns about the number of developments in the area, which is close to developments at Hazlerigg and Great Park in Gosforth.

Jean said: “We’re not happy: we’ve had so many estates built recently, and the traffic is already bad enough as it is.” Bernard Fitzgibbon added: “They are building far too many houses there when I moved here 30 years ago there was nothing but fields until you hit the city.

“Now it’s all being filled up and I don’t see how the roads through here will be able to cope with it.”

The area was set aside for housing in Newcastle’s core strategy, meaning the city council has already indicated it as
