Passenger in crash loses life
POLICE APPEAL FOR FURTHER WITNESSES
A PASSENGER of a white van which collided with a wall in Newcastle has died in hospital.
The driver, aged 44, and the passenger, aged 38, were both taken in hospital in a critical condition following the crash on Jesmond Road at 1am on Monday morning.
The white Ford transit van they had been travelling in collided with a stone wall eastbound on the road between the junction with Sandyford Road and the Cradlewell Bypass.
Doctors were unable to save the passenger who has now been named as Michael Young, from Lobley Hill, Gateshead.
His family is receiving specialist support from police after receiving the devastating news.
The 44-year-old driver is now described as being in a stable condition and is still undergoing treatment.
Police are still investigating the crash and anyone who may have seen what happened is still being urged to contact police.
Sergeant Pinner Rana, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Unit, said: “This is a really tragic case for everyone involved and it is incredibly sad that a man has lost his life.
“Our officers continue to support his family as they come to terms with what has happened while we try and establish exactly what has happened. “We have a few reports of the vehicle in the surrounding area before the collision took place but we still need to speak to people who may have seen what happened.
“If anyone has dashboard camera footage of the vehicle in the minutes before the collision, or the crash itself, then please come forward and speak to police. “Anyone else who may have seen the vehicle is also encouraged to contact police. Any information could be really helpful to the investigation.
