Gosforth derby is top tie in City Cup

THE quarter-final draw for the Newcastle Schools’ Under-11 Bob Maddison City Cup has thrown up interesting matches.
The tie of the round must be the derby between Gosforth Junior and Gosforth Central.
In the previous round Junior dispatched St Lawrence’s and St Charles respectively.
Junior are the current holders and this season have won Northumberland ESFA Danone Nations Cup.
However, the Central team go into this game with very good results behind them and will be looking to secure the bragging rights over their neighbours.
English Martyr’s disposed of St Cuthbert’s Kenton 4-0 and take on Cragside, who were 6-0 victors against Knoplaw.
St John Vianney beat Farne 7-0 and await the victors of the Royal Grammar-St Vincent’s tie. Welbeck will host St Alban’s in the last match.
Welbeck overcame St Oswald’s 3-0 and a cracking tie between St. Alban’s and Walkergate ended 3-2 to the former.
These ties are to be played by January 26.
■ NORTH East schools are still going strongly in this season’s English Schools’ competitions.
Kingsmeadow Under-12s from Gateshead have been on fire in the ESFA PlayStation Cup.
The trio of Joe Rooke, Anthony Munda and Ethan Walker have notched 16 goals between them so far in the competition.
In the last round Kingsmeadow beat John Spence 8-0 with Rooke notching times.
They now have a home tie against St Cuthbert’s in the fifth round.
The Saints recently marched into the semi-finals of the City Colquhoun Cup with a convincing victory over Kenton.
Kingsmeadow Under-12 B are also making good progress in the ESFA PlayStation Cup for B teams.
With John Farrow leading the forward line well, they will play Tadcaster away on Monday (2.30).
The school’s under-13 B squad is also going well in their ESFA Cup and next travels to play Malet Lambert from Hull.
■ OVINGHAM defeated Newminster 4-0 in the Under-12 ESFA PlayStation Small Schools Trophy and now face a trip to Boroughbridge.
Cramlington Learning Village are progressing nicely in two competitions.
Their under-13 side defeated Cardinal Hume 6-1 with Patterson scoring a hat-trick and they now visit Washington’s St Robert of Newminster.
Village’s under-14s face Framwellgate Moor in round four and if they overcome them will travel to Cardinal Hume of Gateshead. ■ BENFIELD Under-14s are having another good run in the ESFA PlayStation Small Schools Trophy.
They have now reached the last 16 after defeating Thirsk School 3-1 with Josh Groom and Kieran Craig among those on target. They now host Hull Collegiate School. ■ WHITLEY Bay are proving a strong force in the Under-15 ESFA PlayStation Cup.
They defeated John Spence 6-0 in round four and next take on Laurence Jackson from Middlesbrough in the fifth round on Wednesday at Valley Gardens (2.00).
