An Ayr of contentment surrounds Black Cats’ target Shankland

-

THE Ayr United striker linked with a move to Sunderland says he would prefer not to move in January, writes STUART RAYNER.

Lawrence Shankland has been in prolific form for the Honest Men, scoring 26 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season.

That has prompted the 23-year-old to be linked with around 20 clubs - including the Black Cats, who are managed by his former St Mirren boss Jack Ross.

Shankland’s Somerset Park contract is up at the end of the season but with Ayr top of the Scottish Championship he insists he is in no mood to move before then.

Shankland said: “I will not be knocking anyone’s door asking for a move.

“I am more than happy here and will be doing everything I can to see out the season with Ayr.

“There is a lot of talk about offers being made but there has never been anything official.

“If the club get offered something they cannot turn down that is their call.”

Chairman Lachlan Cameron has already made it known he would prefer to hang on to the player, rather than jeopardise Ayr’s promotion chances.

Sunderland are in a similar position with their own highly-rated top-scorer.

Josh Maja is also out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a string of Championship and Premier League clubs.

Maja has been offered a new deal and Sunderland insist they have had no indication he wishes to leave.
