Shields’ win is love-Lee boost

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

SOUTH Shields forward Lee Mason admitted his side was not at its best in the narrow 3-2 win over Stalybridge Celtic.

The former North Shields and Blyth Spartans’ player scored twice for the Mariners.

However, it was winger Josh Gillies who claimed the decisive goal as his cross found the back of the net in injury time to give his sidevictory.

Graham Fenton and Lee Picton’s side now lies just one place and one point behind the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division play-off places ahead of next weekend’s trip to struggling Lancaster City.

Mason said: “What a great way to go and win the game in the last minute.

“We dug deep in the second half and I think we deserved it.

“We were not at our best but I think we deserved the win.

“Teams come here and look at the pitch and they try and play it.

“They made it difficult for us but we got there in the end.

“It was great to score two goals because in the last few games I have had chances I should have scored from.

“It gives me confidence and hopefully we can all carry that on now.”

Evo-Stik NPL East leaders Morpeth Town were left frustrated as their game at Brighouse Town was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off.

Both sets of players were finalising their preparations for the game when a sudden downpour of rain led to the postponement of the fixture.

Highwaymen’s joint-manager Nicky Gray revealed his side wanted to play the game, despite the difficult conditions.

He said: “I am disappointed because we got there and we wanted to get last weekend’s defeat out of our system.

“We do not have a game next week.

“They said it was OK on Saturday morning and the referee then came out for his warm-up and said it was a lot worse.

“It was hard in areas and now we have to come here on a Monday night, which is the last thing we wanted to do.”
