Dubravka’s shock at top honour
NEWCASTLE United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will mark his first year on Tyneside with the North East Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award.
The 29-year-old joined on loan on the final day of the January transfer window 2018 before making his move permanent in the summer.
He immediately endeared himself to fans with a matchwinning debut against Manchester United - helping his side keep a clean sheet as Matt Ritchie netted the only goal of the game.
This season has seen him again produce miracles between the sticks, saves against Everton’s Cenk Tosun standing out.
However, the Slovak admitted his surprise at being named the North East Football Writers Association player of the year.
He said: “I am really surprised and honoured to win the award.
“It means a great deal to me but it would not be possible without my team-mates.
“I went to last year’s award ceremony with some of the guys to congratulate Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie and it was a great night, so I will be very proud to receive the trophy myself.
“Thank you to all of the journalists and writers who voted for me. It was an excellent year and I hope 2019 will be even better for me and for my team.”
United manager Rafa Benitez was full of praise for his goalkeeper, saying: “Martin was a massive signing for us and he made a big difference for the team in the second half of the league last season - and has been outstanding also this year.
“At the same time, he is a great professional, an experienced player who is a great example for the young players.
“I am really pleased to see that people now recognise how good he really is.”
