Wait for your Toon chance, Elias is told

ELIAS Sorensen must continue to be patient and wait for his chance at Newcastle United – according to coach Ben Dawson.

The Danish teenager, who has just signed a new three-and-halfyear deal with the Magpies, has now netted 19 goals this season and is knocking on the door for a firstteam appearance under Rafa Benitez.

Benitez has resisted the temptation to call up the former HB Koge youngster who arrived on Tyneside just three years ago as a raw centre-forward at just 16.

However, things have dropped into place for Sorensen this season with the player not only banging in the goals but also speaking fluent Geordie!

His form this season has been outstanding but the coaching staff still feel there is room for improvement.

Dawson said: “When you are scrapping at the bottom of the league it is not the best time to play youngsters. There has been loads of debate about whether to play Elias Sorensen or not. “Should he get an opportunity? “Well it’s the wrong time, he is still a young age. There are certain situations that lend themselves to better opportunities.”

Sorensen will play in the Checkatrade Trophy tie at Sunderland before heading out on international duty with the Denmark youth side.

After that he could come back and be loaned out or complete his season with the Under-23s.

Dawson said: “That is where and why we utilise the loan system for some players. Some need that next step.”

Newcastle signed Sorensen from Denmark as a youngster but change could on the horizon, and the implications of Brexit could prevent a story like this happening again.

Dawson explained: “It is becoming more difficult, and the impact of Brexit could change rules and regulations and force clubs to play younger players.

“I suppose there will be pros and cons. Clubs here will then fall under FIFA rules so we can’t then sign players from abroad under the age of 18.”
