Dress to impress for return of comicon
FILM characters Hulk, Sulley and Groot will be among the star guests at a comicon event in Newcastle later this month, which is being billed as a “geeky family-friendly fun day”.
And what promises to be a smallscale comic-con-style event could prove the perfect size for those who have young ones in tow, while offering visitors the chance to get up close and personal with some favourite characters.
Monsters, Inc’s Sulley and Groot, from Guardians of the Galaxy, will be dispensing a few cuddles, while everyone’s favourite less-than-jolly green giant Hulk will be posing for photo opportunities and possibly indulging in a little (heavy-footed) dancing.
A special movie guest on the day will be Virginia Hey, who TV fans might recall as blue-skinned alien princess Pa’u Zotoh Zhaan in sci-fi series Farscape, or perhaps as Warrior Woman in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
So, in the run-up to the event, here are the answers to the questions you will want to know if you are planning a visit.
What is Newcastle Comicon?
It’s a “comic convention” day presented by Unleashed Events.
Where and when is it?
It’s on Sunday, February 24 at Jury’s Inn in Scotswood Road, Newcastle, and will run on the day from 10am until 4pm.
Who are the special guests?
Virginia Hey from Mad Max and Farscape. The actress’s other roles have included James Bond movie The Living Daylights.
Sulley and Groot from Monsters, Inc and Guardians of the Galaxy, and Hulk join a line-up that’s enough to make other superheroes green with envy.
What about other characters?
Expect North East Ghostbusters, and there also will be a range of costumed screen heroes and heroines, including Star Wars characters and princesses.
Are there stalls?
Yes, organisers say there will be lots of “geeky traders”, so look out for toys, comics, collectables, art, jewellery and gaming.
Anything else?
There will be cosplay competi-
tions, so go along in character for a chance to win prizes, as well as an Anime hour presented by Strange Porcelain Company, and a Fortnite prop area. Costume builds from costume company Seams Legit will be giving demonstrations, displaying their work and answering any cosplay construction questions.
There is also a kids’ craft area
What about refreshments?
There is a restaurant and bar at Jury’s Inn.
How do I go about getting tickets?
Visitors can just pay on the door from 10am on the day, but advance tickets are also available which give buyers first entry and enable them to jump the queue.
The cost is £5 for adults and £3 for a child (under 12).
Under-fives have free entry with an accompanying adult ticket holder.
