Bus and mobility scooter in city centre crash
A MAN on a mobility scooter was rushed to hospital in a “serious” condition after being knocked over by a bus in Newcastle city centre.
Blackett Street was closed for almost two hours following the collision at about 4pm yesterday.
The man, whose age is not known, suffered serious head injuries and has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Emergency services flooded the area within minutes, with access to adjacent Newgate Street and Percy Street also closed to traffic.
Paul McIntosh, senior investigating officer with Northumbria Police, said the collision happened outside Next at about 4pm and involved a man on a scooter crossing the road and a double-decker bus. He added: “The public and police were there very soon to help him as best they could. He’s been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where his condition has been described as serious.
“We have a team of police officers here who are busy taking measurements and getting as much evidence from the scene as possible.”
One bystander described walking along Percy Street when collision investigators rushed past him to get to the scene.
Investigators were seen taking pictures and measurements, laying markers and examining the mobility scooter.
Queues of traffic formed on Gallowgate and Percy Street during rush hour, and the road was reopened just before 6pm.
