Star shine and cut lead of Uni

NEWCASTLE Blue Star narrowed the gap on leaders Newcastle University to six points after they won 3-0 at Alnwick Town.

The Students, meanwhile, were progressin­g to the final of the Benevolent Bowl with a 3-2 victory at Whitley Bay A.

Phil Grant opened the scoring for Blue Star after 35 minutes, which Richard Coulson doubled 30 minutes later.

Mitchell Ramsay put the seal on the match eight minutes later.

As Killingwor­th were progressin­g to the final of the Challenge Cup, 1-0 against visitors New Fordley, Wallington were joining them in third place in the league.

They enjoyed a 4-2 success at Gateshead Reserves thanks to goals from Thomas Truscott, Jake Walton, Justin Millican and Michael Angus.

The cup result was settled by Malcolm Morien, Fordley’s goalkeeper keeping the score to a minimum with an inspired performanc­e - although they also missed a first-half penalty.

Ponteland crashed to a 6-3 loss at lowly FC United.

Steven Matthew and Ryan McAvoy both scored twice for the victors, Anthony Brown and Garry Winter also on the mark.

Reece Havelock-Brown, Tom Bainbridge and Louis Calvert replied.

There were also big victories for lower-league sides as Newcastle Chemfica picked up a 4-0 result at home to Shankhouse - Sam Grieveson smashing a second-half hat-trick to add to Olly Ure’s opener.

Seaton Delaval triumphed 2-1 against Percy Main, Paddy Gibbons and Andrew Carr with early efforts for the hosts and Paul Collinson netting from the spot in the second half.

Gateshead Rutherford drew 2-2 with North Shields Athletic.

Paul Van-Zanderveli­et opened the scoring in the first half, Tom Young levelling on the hour.

Dillon Howarth looked to have turned the game around ten minutes from time - but in the last minute Michael Begbie struck to earn a share of the spoils.
