STAB HORROR
Man, 37, critically ill after street incident
A MAN is fighting for his life after he was stabbed in the street.
Police, ambulances and the air ambulance were called to Chatsworth Gardens, near St Anthony’s Park in Walker, Newcastle, just before 10am yesterday.
A 37-year-old injured man was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Northumbria Police said the man’s injuries were “consistent with a stabbing”.
Two men, aged 58 and 18, were arrested and remain in police custody.
A police cordon was put up in the back lane behind Chatsworth Gardens and a large area of grass behind the street was cordoned off.
Uniformed police stood guard at the front and black doors of one home on the street while detectives carried out door-to-door inquiries.
One neighbour who asked not to be named, told The Chronicle that he heard screams near the time of the incident.
The 26-year-old said: “I just heard some screaming. It was some pretty blood-curdling screams. I heard a couple of screams, but there’s usually quite a bit of noise, so I didn’t think much of it. I did think about going over at the time, but you never know whether to get involved or not.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said yesterday: “We received a call at 9.54 this morning to a male who was injured.
“We sent a double-crewed ambulance, two hazardous area response team vehicles and the air ambulance.
“The patient was taken by ambulance to the RVI.
“The air ambulance doctor went with him in the ambulance.
Anyone who saw what happened is being encouraged to contact Northumbria Police.
