Senators edge out Dynamos in Cup clash TABLE TENNIS

MATFEN Senators defeated Cramlingto­n Dynamos 5-4 in the first round of the Northumbri­a Winter League Cup.

NECA A beat Matfen Tribunes 6-3, Matfen Centurions overcame Prudhoe B 6-3, Mount B saw off Cramlingto­n Knights 5-1 and Ouston B triumphed 6-3 against Tyneside TTC C.

In Division One, Brandon Anacondas secured an 8-2 win over Ouston A thanks to Stephen Pattinson and Ian Richardson, who both won their three games.

Jamie Westwater took one match and paired up with Richardson to win the doubles.

In the top-versus-bottom clash between Newcastle University and Ouston A, the students lost their unbeaten record – going down 7-3.

The win moved Ouston off the bottom of the table.

Neil Wilkinson was player of the match, winning his three games.

In Division Four, the top two teams Cramlingto­n Dynamos and Cramlingto­n Dragons were in action.

WHITLEY Renegades moved up to second spot in the English Under20 League table after defeating Coventry Blaze 4-2 at Hillheads.

Netminder Jacob Hammond faced 59 shots on his net.

He made several good saves before he was beaten in the seventh minute when Iain Peters scored to give Blaze the lead.

Renegades stuck to their task and were level six minutes later when fine work by Thomas Fraser and Callum Wilkinson resulted in Logan Jean-Jacques driving in the equaliser for his third goal of the season.

Jean-Jacques is one of three Bradford Bulldogs players icing for the Renegades this season.

The home side went ahead six minutes into the second period when Wilkinson struck, Jamie Ord picking up the assist.

Parity was restored in the 34th minute when Kieran Gibbs found a way past the impressive Hammond for 2-2.

Before the second period had ended, the home side had retaken the lead – Fraser hitting the target for his sixth goal of the season at 37.30.

The Dynamos sealed a straightfo­rward 10-0 victory over Cramlingto­n Colts.

The Dynamos’ team of Alan Roskilly, Tony Roskilly and Rohan Rawat proved too strong for their opponents.

Cramlingto­n Dragons enjoyed an equally straightfo­rward 9-1 success against Cramlingto­n Magpies.

Pauline Long and Adrian Barnes both took their three games, Stephen Baxter winning twice. ■■THE Northumbri­a League’s junior team was in action on day one of the National Junior League at Ormesby.

The team of Oliver Ho, Alan Roskilly, Harry Veitch and Jack Cairns beat Ormesby C 9-0, Darlington A 7-2 and Ormesby B 8-1.

At the end of round one of matches the squad is joint top with Ormesby A, although it does have a game in hand. goals in an end-to-end encounter and early in the final period the Renegades doubled their advantage when Wilkinson – set up by Fraser – found the net.

Coventry put plenty of pressure on the Renegades goal, but Hammond stood firm as he made a string of excellent saves to keep Coventry at bay and ensure Whitley stayed ahead.

■ WHITLEY Mohawks consolidat­ed

The Northumbri­a League cadet team of (left to right) Ferg Kilsby, Leo Conn and Oliver Ho played on day one of the National Cadet League at Ormesby. The trio beat Darlington 5-4 and then enjoyed 9-0 victories over Scarboroug­h and Bridlingto­n third place in English Under13 North Division Two, comfortabl­y defeating Sutton Sting at Hillheads 8-4.

Bottom club Sutton took the lead after only three minutes through Sebastian Veal.

The home side hit back early in the middle session when Oliver Jardine tucked away the equaliser at 20.15 – Jack Williams picking up the assist.

Williams had a hand in the second Mohawks’ goal at 21.41 when he and Ben Wood sent Jardine on his way.

It soon became 3-1 when Josh Noble aided Dylan Towndrow for his eighth goal of the season.

Sutton pulled a goal back three minutes later through Veal – but in the final period the home side stepped up the pressure.

They struck just 26 seconds into the final period as Kian Kennedy added an assist to his tally and enabled Sam Hails to notch his second goal of the season.

Mohawks then hit Sting with four strikes through Williams – who in the process completed a hat-trick – and Max Torre before Veal and Owen Cutts reduced the deficit for the visitors.
