- By KIRSTEN PRINGLE Reporter

A LIFE-CHANGING charity has received a substantial cash boost from a local businesswoman’s family.

The McArdle family has pledged its support for the Newcastle United Foundation with a ‘generous’ donation of money.

The contribution will be spent on the charity’s capital project to renovate Murray House, in Newcastle city centre. This will transform the former community centre into a state-of-the-art sports, health, education and wellbeing facility for the public.

A number of guests were at St James’ Park on Thursday to hear more about the foundation’s association with the the McArdle family, including Foundation Patron Jonathan Edwards and the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor David Cook.

Helen said: “The Foundation has been interesting because with my children being involved with the charity, I’d like to think that I’m leaving a legacy. One day I hope they will take over the mantle of looking after the Foundation - in any way that they can.”

Having founded McArdle Care and Kids 1st Nurseries, Helen has dedicated herself to improving lives in the North East. She is best known for her work and donations for the care industry.

Sarah Medcalf, senior development manager at the Newcastle United Foundation spoke about the new development for Murray House:

She said: “The project is a culmination of years of hard work, building on Newcastle’s unrivalled passion for football. The centre will be a vibrant place for thousands of young people and their families to access new opportunities and we look forward to the McArdle family being a key part of our future.”
