A SUSPECTED hit-and-run on a busy city road has claimed a second life.

The Chronicle reported on Sunday that a 75-year-old woman pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision, which happened on Jesmond Road in Jesmond, Newcastle, on Saturday evening.

Her 79-year-old husband who was seriously injured in the incident was taken to hospital in a critical condition. But he has now died, Northumbri­a Police has confirmed.

The collision, which happened near the Punch Bowl pub was reported at around 7.20pm on Saturday. An investigat­ion was launched to trace the dark-coloured vehicle and its driver, which left the scene.

The couple’s family are today still being supported by specialist police officers, as Northumbri­a Police’s motor patrols unit continue their investigat­ion.

Sgt Matt Sykes, of Northumbri­a Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said officers still need witnesses to come forward.

He said: “This is a truly upsetting case which has resulted in the tragic death of two people and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time.

“I want to thank all the witnesses who came forward and helped share the appeal, it helped us gather a wealth of informatio­n.

“We are still interested in speaking with anyone else who might have seen what happened, or thinks they may have dashcam footage. Please contact us as soon as possible if you think you can assist.”

A 22-year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released under investigat­ion.

A 24-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He also remains under investigat­ion.
